Clarke & Clarke Art + Artifacts sells sculpture, masks, textiles and antiquities, but stepping inside the spcae is more like a travel experience than a shopping one.

Visitors even have their own tour guides, owners Jim and Ginny Clarke who call themselves “gypsy merchants.”

The husband and wife team moved their warehouse-style retail store of colorful ethnographic treasures from Seattle’s Pioneer Square to the Overlake area last month.

Jim Russell will miss Bellevue.

From his neighbors at Monsoon East to his regular costumers, it’ll be hard to leave behind his Old Bellevue storefront on Main Street. Russell’s business, Ming’s Asian Gallery, has been a staple here for the last 25 years.

Now, he’s’ consolidating his business at his other location in Seattle’s International District. He’ll close his doors in Bellevue for the last time on Oct. 15.

Bellevue resident Clark Roberts has always loved to ski. Outdoor activities such as tandem biking, wake boarding and snow sports were always a passion of his.

When he starting going blind, that passion didn’t change.

“You have to come to the point when you can embrace your situation,” said Roberts, who was diagnosed with Retinitis pigmentosa, an eye disease that has caused him to lose almost all of his vision. “You realize that you can still do the things you want to do, just in a different way.”

Each September, hundreds of women come from throughout the region to take a stand – or more accurately, a ride, against the problem – domestic violence.

Cycle the Wave, Sept. 18, is a non-competitive bicycle race for women on the Eastside that gives 100 percent of proceeds to nonprofits such as Eastside Domestic Violence Program (EDVP). Last year, Cycle the Wave brought in more than 800 riders, 100 volunteers and $80,000.

Wearing new backpacks and sneakers, 125 ninth and sixth graders breathed new life into the old Robinswood building on the first day of school Tuesday.

While scores of other students in the district returned to their buildings for another year, these middle and high schoolers ate a celebratory cake and attended a ceremony for the inaugural day of the Bellevue Big Picture School.
