It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we honor the life of Melissa Ann McBrian Slater, who passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026, at Covenant Living at the Shores on Mercer Island, WA. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on February 24, 1937, Ann was the cherished daughter of John Downing McBrian and Geneva Katherine Mangrum. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and her dear sister, Lucy.

Ann had a remarkable spirit, overcame multiple health challenges, and filled her journey with adventure. She leaves behind a loving family, including her three sons, Jeffrey Mark Slater, Gregory Scott Slater, and Charles Hollis Slater III, along with their spouses, 12 adoring grandchildren and 22 beloved great grandchildren. Ann’s family will carry on her legacy of kindness and compassion.

Ann’s academic pursuits began at Dearborn High School, with her senior year completed at Central High School in Flint, where she graduated with “high distinction.” Ann’s passion for English literature led her to Cornell University, where she graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts and Science. Ann’s life was a testament to her love of learning and her dedication to sharing her wisdom with others.

Ann’s life was also enriched by her deep involvement with the Bellevue Presbyterian Church, where her faith and artistic talents flourished. A talented painter, Ann was trained by an Italian artist, and she brought to life a myriad of landscapes that captured the immense beauty she saw in the world. Her works, including a commissioned series for her church, continue to inspire and uplift those who experience them. She also loved shepherding her sons through the scouting program as a den mother.

Ann was a gifted gourmet cook with a particular flair for European cuisine—especially dishes from France and Italy. Her culinary creations reflected her warmth, hospitality, and the joy she found in bringing people together.

Ann was widely known for her resilience, unwavering hope in humanity’s goodness, and a generosity that knew no bounds. Her kindness, sharp mind, and sense of humor elicited joy and laughter from all who had the privilege of knowing her.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Covenant Living at the Shores for the exceptional care provided to Ann in her final years. The message in her last Christmas card, sent to family and friends around the world, encapsulated the essence of her enduring faith and love: “On your journey to the Tree of Life by God’s River of Delight may you know a myriad of blessings, hope, and assurance of Christ’s ever faithful LOVE!!!”

A private funeral service will be held to honor Ann’s life. In lieu of any flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Bellevue Presbyterian Church—an organization that held a special place in Ann’s heart.

Ann McBrian Slater’s life was a tapestry of love, faith, and creativity, and her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family and friends as a beacon of light, love and grace.
