City of Bellevue offering prep for Bike to Work Day | Community recreation news

This year’s Group Health Commute challenge gets underway on Tuesday, May 1 with Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 18 and the city of Bellevue is offering professional instruction for cyclists on how to share the road and remain safe on their commute.
The class will be at Bellevue City Hall, Room 1E-113 and will be taught by certified a Cascade instructor. The course will last roughly 30 minutes and cover choosing and adjusting a bike, clothing and gear, helmets, bike maintenance and most importantly, how to share the road with motorists and remain safe on the commute.
625 residents and 373 people who work in Bellevue participated in the challenge last year.
Tips for cyclists, drivers
Cyclists can ride safely in traffic by:
Obeying stop signs and stop lights;
Riding single file when appropriate;
Always using hand signals.
Driver can safely share the road with bicyclists by:
Allowing at least three feet when passing a cyclist;
Treating a bike like any slow moving vehicle; and
Always being alert and looking for cyclists.
