Bellevue City Council accepted a federal grant of $1.1 million to widen 120th Avenue Northeast from two lanes of traffic, to five. Additional improvements would include bike lanes and sidewalks between Northeast Eighth Street and 12th Street.

The grant, from the Surface Transportation Program, will cover a third of costs when coupled with an earlier grant of $3 million from the state Transportation Improvement Board. Construction on the $12.2 million project is likely to begin in 2014.

The project is part of an initiative in Bel-Red to allow for future growth.
