Bothell’s Veronica Asence was named Miss Seafair this year. The title comes with a a $5,000 check from Davis Wright Tremaine along with $3,300 more through The Scholarship Program for Women. Asence will make more than 100 appearances at Seattle-area events in the coming year. Asence is a 2010 graduate of Seattle University with degrees in humanities and French.
A Sammamish mother’s efforts to help her autistic son has grown into Autism Day WA, a free event expected to attract close to 1,200 people. Events and activities will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jubilee Farms, 229 W. Snoqualmie River Road NE, Carnation. More information is available at www.autismdaywa.com
Former Issaquah High School grad Jennie Reed won a silver medal at the London Olympics on Aug. 4 as part of the United States women’s cycling team. Reed, 34, took part in the semifinal and preliminary rounds of the event. Reed took up women’s cycling at the Marymoor Velodrome in Redmond and now lives in Long Beach Calif. She is a 15-time national champion.
The Redmond City Council has extended its moratorium on medical marijuana collective gardens by another six months. Late last year, the council approved the first six-month moratorium to give city staff time to study the state law concerning collective gardens and the impacts they could have on the community before recommending any type of regulations. In November, state residents will vote on a measure to legalize marijuana for recreational use. The council hopes the outcome will provide some clarity.
Snoqualmie 9-year-old Mark Marum, is a national champion wrestler. Marum, competing at 50 pounds, dominated his class in the Intermediate Division at the 2012 Asics/USAW Kids Freestyle Nationals, June 26 to 28 in Orem, Utah.
The City of Renton will develop the Renton Aerospace Training Center at its airport where Renton Technical College will train much-needed aerospace workers. The center would train 120 students per quarter, with a staff of four faculty members and would offer Aerospace Manufacturing Assembly Mechanic certificate training.
