School levies? Property tax already too high

Published 10:11 am Thursday, January 28, 2010

I’ve been inundated with mailings and now phone calls to vote “yes” on the two upcoming school levies. I have not received a single mailing or phone call asking me to vote “no.”

Of course the levies will both pass because nobody can dare say no to schools. But the powerful teachers union feels that they still must spend on this big propaganda effort just to make sure.

Where does the union get the money to do this? From the dues its collects from its members. Where do the members get the money to pay their union dues? From the taxpayers of course. So once again, our own money is being used to squeeze even more money out of us.

We are talking no small property tax increase here, up to a 4.4 percent increase over the next five years. Do the math. My property tax is already ridiculously high. I’m voting “no” on both.
