The winter holiday festivities are almost here. This is a special time of year and, unfortunately, some of the things that make the holidays special also increase our risk of home fires and injuries. The Bellevue Fire Department wants seniors to enjoy a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season, without a visit from them.
Here are some safety tips for the holidays:
Cooking is the number one cause of residential fires. Distraction is the culprit, especially during the holidays. The best way to prevent a cooking fire is to stay in the kitchen. If you need to leave the kitchen for a period of time, turn off the stove.
Candles are an important part of many holiday celebrations. Put candles in non-tip holders that will not burn, and always blow out candles when you leave the room. Keep lit candles away from draperies and decorations, and out of reach of children and pets.
Check the electrical cords of your holiday lights, and inspect them for frays or cracks. Don’t overload your electrical outlets, run extension cords under carpets, or pinch them in doorways. Be careful on ladders when hanging lights, and ask for help when needed.
When you pick out a holiday tree, make sure that it is freshly cut. Cut the trunk at an angle, and install it in a deep, non-tip stand. Water it every day and don’t place it near any heat sources or near your exits. After the holidays, remove it promptly.
Check your smoke detectors and replace them if they are more than 10 years old.
