Wildcats give Knights first loss

Newport suffers first setback on the soccer pitch in 2015

Mount Si goalie Bruce Corrie was the equivalent of a proverbial brick wall against the Newport Knights boys soccer team in a showdown between Class 4A KingCo programs.

Newport, who unleashed a bevy of shots on goal, couldn’t get the ball past Corrie in Mount Si’s 3-0 victory against Newport on March 27 in Factoria.

Mount Si players Connor Williams, Max Adamson and Nicholas Dolewski each scored a goal in the KingCo league opener for both squads.

Mount Si head coach Darren Brown said Corrie, who will play collegiate soccer for Western Illinois University in 2016, is the undisputed leader of the Wildcats and is a great player between the posts. The teams were evenly matched but Newport just couldn’t find the back of the net in their first loss of the 2015 season.

“Bruce is a hell of a keeper,” Brown said. “He was a first team all-league player last year and is just an outstanding player.”

Brown said the key play of the game was on Adamson’s goal in the 62nd minute of play, which gave Mount Si a commanding 2-0 lead with 18 minutes left in regulation.

“It gave us a little breathing room that we needed,” Brown said. “We didn’t want to let up on the gas against Newport. They got off to a great 3-0-2 start and are a really good club. We came with a lot of enthusiasm tonight and had a lot to prove. We wanted to get that first win in our first league game. That was important to us and we got that done. Hopefully the momentum continues.”

Newport head coach Tommy Lakes said losing their first league game was frustrating but isn’t something they can’t recover from. The Knights have put together a 3-1-2 record through the first six games of the season.

“We just have to have a five-second memory because that is the way high school soccer works. We need to move on quickly from this loss and start getting ready for our next game,” Lakes said. “This is kind of one of those early forks in the road where you can either start feeling sorry for yourself or you can use it as motivation to get back up and keep going. I think we will keep going.”
