Sewell, Rutledge win WSGA state titles

Sewell, a 17-year-old who will be a senior at Kentridge High School next year, won the girl's 16-17 title at the Washington Junior Golf Association's State Championship. Sewell finished the final round, held at Bellevue's Glendale Country Club, at par, winning the tile by four strokes over Kirkland's Simone Strauss.

Sewell, a 17-year-old who will be a senior at Kentridge High School next year, won the girl’s 16-17 title at the Washington Junior Golf Association’s State Championship. Sewell finished the final round, held at Bellevue’s Glendale Country Club, at par, winning the tile by four strokes over Kirkland’s Simone Strauss.

Sewell won the event three years ago as a 14-year-old; this was her last year of eligibility in a bid to win the title again.

Boys champion Michael Rutledge began the final round Saturday tied with Zach Wanderscheid. Rutledge, a Mount Si graduate, shot a 1-over-par 73, and finished with a final score of 215, two better than Wanderscheid of Goldendale and Kent Hagen of Covington.

Li Wang of Sammamish and Tyler Salsbury of Enumclaw finished tied at 217 for the Boys 14-15 division, while Frank Olav Garber of Kirkland took home the Boys 12-13 division with the same score.

Spencer Tibbits of Vancouver won the Boys 8-11.

Kimberly Santiago of Lynnwood won the Girls 14-15 title with a score of 228, while Dupont’s Cherokee Kim won the 12-13 with a score of 223. Sarah Rhee of Seattle won the Girls 8-11.

Local players who made it to the final round were Alex Pakzad (Boys 16-17, 231 overall score, did not place) and Andy Liu (Boys 12-13, 228, fifth place).
