Eastside Lions to play for Shield Championship | Rugby
The U19 Eastside Lions, an Eastside Youth Rugby Club composed of area athletes, will play for the Shield Championship on Saturday at Magnuson Park in Seattle.
The Lions qualified for the championship game by beating the Shelton Savages 58-10 last weekend at Juanita High School.
Junior outside center Shelby Williams of Mount Si scored two tries and assisted on a third by senior wing Gabe Eiger, a Bellevue Christian student.
Sophomore lock Hobie Sisk of Juanita scored two tries, while captain Gen Kuksasabe of Newport High School also scored a try in the first half.
Alex Cannon (Interlake), Rio Fernandez (Eastlake) and Tomas Narvaja (Sammamish) scored second half tries. Sophomore flyhalf Stevie Stefanovic was 4-of-9 on conversion kicks.
With the win, the Lions will play the Gig Harbor Hurricanes Saturday at 12 p.m.
"We did the basics well and played as a team," said Eastside coach Josh Young. "Harbor will put up a much better fight, but we are the best team and I expect we will prove that on the field Saturday. I am very proud of our boys."
