For the first time since 2002, the Newport boys basketball team is among the state's final 16 teams.

The Knights beat Mount Vernon 66-55 on Tuesday in a pigtail game to earn the final regional round spot and set a Saturday date with Eastmont at Wetnatchee High School.

Will Ferris paced coach Steve Haizlip's squad with 19 points and the Knights also got 17 from Isaac Dotson, 15 from Miles Fowler and 11 more from Jason Lock.

Lake Stevens spoiled the party for the Newport girls, leaving with a 48-43 win behind a game-high 22 points from Brooke Pahukoa.

The loss ends the season for the Knights, who lost despite nine points each from Anna Crabtree and Chiara Victor.
