SWAT on the water | Bellevue Police perform drills on Lake Washington

Bellevue SWAT team members took to the waters of Lake Washington on Tuesday to train for how to approach an emergency situation by boat.

Police Capt. John McCracken said the Meydenbauer Marina was an ideal training location, based on the difficult street and home layouts around it.

“The street access is sometimes terrible,” he said.

SWAT members perform a minimum of 20 hours of training each month and the additional marine unit training will account for another 10 hours, McCracken said. Team members start off with lengthy drills in a pool, having to perform tasks like pulling a teammate through the water while both are wearing full tactical gear.

“It’s not as much fun to put our gear in that chlorinated water,” McCracken said, adding SWAT members are aided by new flotation equipment.
