A Newcastle man plead guilty to first-degree theft in King County Superior Court last month.

Dr. Jian Xu, 62, was sentenced to pay more than $90,000 in restitution to UNUM Insurance, plus court fees, according to an Office of the Insurance Commissioner report.

Xu had collected a total of $304,000 in long-term disability from UNUM Insurance from 2006 to 2015 and $55,400 in unemployment benefits, according to the report. Xu collected long-term disability while he was working at colleges and universities.

“Xu also altered Social Security Administration documents that he submitted to UNUM as proof that he was not eligible for Social Security disability insurance,” according to the report.
