Bellevue Baha'i gathering to protest jailing of members in Iran
June 24, 2009 · 12:30 PM
A gathering will take place 7:30 p.m. on June 27 at the Eastside Baha’i Center to commemorate the one-year anniversary of seven Baha’i Leaders imprisoned in Iran. Similar meetings will take place throughout the U.S. that day.
The seven jailed leaders are charged with espionage for Israel, although their supporters say they have been imprisoned for their religious beliefs.
New accusations of "spreading of corruption on Earth" have been added, according to families of the prisoners. Such charges carry the threat of death under Iran's penal code, they said.
The human rights group Human Rights Watch has called for the prisoners' release.
The Eastside Baha'i Center is located at 16007 Northeast Eighth Street in Bellevue.
