Small fire at condo complex displaces residents
January 21, 2011 · 12:19 PM
Residents of the Highland Condominiums in Overlake were displaced overnight after a fire caused by issues with recent plumbing work.
The fire began at 5:10 p.m. Thursday in a shared laundry room. Firefighters from Bellevue and Redmond initially thought an automatic fire had gone off until arriving on the scene at Northeast 31st Street and 148th Avenue Northeast.
The fire was small, but it damaged the electrical system and caused water damage on all floors.
Damages totaled more than $200,000 and residents of the 24-unit building had to be evacuated. The American Red Cross assisted residents with temporary housing until the situation could be rectified.
Repair work began Friday, and most residents were expected to able to return to their homes at that time.
