I commend the Bellevue City Council for its thoughtful, careful approach to siting the much-needed men’s shelter. We should all appreciate the council’s dilemma as it works to provide a compassionate solution to homelessness, while listening to residents who seek a thorough investigation of possible sites and potential impacts.

I would ask residents to recognize that the homeless are among us, and failure to provide for their basic needs is really not a reasonable alternative. Whatever the council members decide, they will have worked hard to listen, respond and compromise as they take responsibility for addressing a critical issue in our community.
