Talent show planned for people with disabilities

A free talent show featuring the performances of youth and adults with developmental disabilities will be offered from 6:30-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 at the Highland Community Center.

“Highland Has Great Talent” also will feature light refreshments and door prizes. Donations will be accepted at the door to benefit specialized recreation programs for people with disabilities.

The youngest performer will be Morgan Lawrence Jr., a 13-year old violinist who dreams of becoming an “American Idol.” Lawrence, who has autism, first picked up an instrument at age four and can learn music just by listening to it.

The show will also feature the talent of singer Sherry Hegna, 42, who has a brain disorder.

Bellevue’s Highland Center is producing the show to provide these and other youth and adults with an opportunity to showcase their talents, and to give the public an opportunity to see how extraordinary the individuals are.

The Highland Center provides people with disabilities opportunities for recreation, socialization and learning, so they can participate more successfully in the community. It provides a wide range of classes from sports, drama, cooking, dance, art and special events. The Highland Center has provided recreation programs for youth and adults with developmental disabilities since 1970.

The center is located at 14224 Bel-Red Road.
