Bellevue Mayor Grant Degginger recognized National Safe Boating Week (May 16-22) by donning a life jacket in council chambers May 4.

Degginger and members the Bellevue Sail and Power Squadron were using the occasion to educate boaters about wearing life jackets at all times while on the water.

Approximately 700 people drown each year from recreational boating accidents.

Ninety percent of the 676 recreational-boating fatalities in 2004 happened to victims who were not wearing life jackets.
