Volunteer opportunities aplenty in Bellevue

The city of Bellevue has over 38 ongoing volunteer programs and hundreds of volunteer opportunities available, ranging from civic engagement to environmental stewardship to recreation.

July 4th Event: The Bellevue Parks and Community Service Department, in partnership with Symetra, is planning the annual Family 4th, a community celebration of America’s freedom and independence. Perennial Potting at the Bellevue Botanical Garden: Join others from 11-4 on Sunday July 13 for a day of perennial potting. The event will lift, clean, divide and pot up treasures for re-use in the borders as well as plant sales. Lunch and camaraderie provided. Call 425-452-2750 for more information.

Northwest Arts and Crafts Fair: Bellevue Botanical Garden Society is looking for additional volunteers to help staff the NW Arts and Craft Fair artists break area during this year’s fair which will be held on July 25, 26, 27. Volunteer Canoe Guides Needed: Share your expertise in a beautiful, natural environment. The city needs canoe guides to provide canoe tours of the Mercer Slough Nature Park Contact Laura Hughes, 425-452-4195

Downtown Transit Center Community Police Station Volunteers Needed: The Bellevue Police Department needs volunteers to staff the Downtown Transit Center Community Police Station.

Volunteers answer phones, assist walk-in visitors, and help the station officer with special projects and community events. Volunteers work one four-hour shift each week (Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. or 2-6 p.m.).

Successful applicants will be at least 21 years of age, have a strong customer-service orientation, and be able to pass a rigorous background investigation process. To request an application booklet, contact the Bellevue Police Volunteer Coordinator at 425-452-6017.

Help Out With Specialized Recreation Programs: Volunteer to help out with specialized recreation programs at Highland Center. Help is needed in after school programs (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. 3-5 p.m.) for kids with developmental disabilities as well as evening programs for adults with developmental disabilities. Classes include sports, cooking, dance, fitness, drama and cheerleading.

There are no special qualifications, but an interest in the specific class a person volunteers for is a must. Contact Kim Indurkar at 425-452-7686.
