Newport drill teams takes first

For the first time ever, the Newport High School Drill Team won the district drill competition March 10 at Bothell High School. The 24-member team achieved the highest overall score and a superior ranking.

The team won four first-place finishes during the season. Team captains are Teresa Schaaf and Taylor Suyama; Newport's coach is Leona Beutel. The team moves on to the state competition March 23 at the Sun Dome in Yakima. Newport won the state title in 2008.
