Batter's up for Cupcake Royale's last day on Main
Cupcake Royale in Bellevue will be serving up specialty pancakes and taking down memories during its last day on Main Street next week.
Having been situated in Old Bellevue for a little more than four years, Cupcake Royale and other surrounding businesses are being forced to shut down and relocate to make way for The Gateway, a mixed-use development on Main Street that will include apartments, retail and dining space. But Cupcake Royale owner Jody Hall says she's negotiating a lease downtown to keep Bellevue customers satisfied.
Those wanting to get their fix and share memories from Cupcake Royale or the former IHOP that used to be there are invited out 7 a.m. to noon Wednesday for the store's final day for a Royale Grand Slam Special: Two cupcake batter pancakes, a topping bar that inlcudes buttercream or Royale Creamery ice cream and a 12-ounce espresso for $5. Hall will be there to serve up those pancakes.
"Our whole thing is about being in great neighborhoods, and Main Street felt like a really great, authentic neighborhood," Hall said of her decision to open one of her seven cupcake cafes here. The pancakes are a nod to IHOP, which she said many customers still remember. "We just thought we'd pay tribute to the last originally built IHOP location in the area that's going to be facing the wrecking ball soon."
Hall said she's already received a few stories from customers and hopes to combine more into a blog post, rewarding those who shared their stories with cupcakes, of course.
"It's amazing," she said. "There are so many cool memories, gatherings, events that people remember."
Cupcake Royale has been seeking out a new Bellevue location for about a year now, Hall said, and she's confident that location will be released to the public as soon as the lease is signed. While renovations at the new location are being completed, a Cupcake Royale food truck will operate outside starting in July, she said.
"It's not too far from our current location," Hall said, adding it was important to provide in-and-out parking and other amenities found at the Main Street cafe. "It's not on Main Street but it's kind of closer to the shopping core."
Online ordering will continue once the physical site in Bellevue closes, with customers being able to pick up their orders at Pagliacci's on Main. Free delivery also will be offered within Bellevue zipcodes for orders of a dozen or more cupcakes by calling 425-454-7966 or at Bellevue@cupcakeroyale.com.
